YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO GROUP TO DISCUSS MAN-MADE EARTHQUAKES, FRACKING, AND BRINE TOXIC WASTE INJECTION WELLS

Youngstown, Ohio - On Thursday, February 2, 2012, a group of concerned Youngstown citizens and panelists will hold an open public town hall style informational meeting to discuss and answer audience questions about the recent 4.0 magnitude Youngstown area earthquake, hydraulic fracturing (fracking) associated with shale gas drilling, and brine toxic waste injection wells. The meeting will take place at The First Unitarian Universalist Church of Youngstown, Channing Hall, at 6-8 pm at 1105 Elm St. (Elm & Illinois), Youngstown, Ohio. Media and the general public are invited to attend.

Geology Professor Ray Beiersdorfer, Ph.D., spoke to WYTV news (1/1/12) regarding the Youngstown earthquakes and the nearby injection well’s effect of reactivating an ancient fault: “What happens is the water acts as a lubricant so they were pumping water down at about 9,000 feet, and it was working its way down in and it wound up serving as a lubricant, which then reduced the friction and we had the earthquakes.“

Dr. Beiersdorfer will be a panelist at the February 2^nd town hall as will Ohio State Representative Robert Hagan, Liberty Township Trustee Jodi Stoyak, and a citizen affected by water contamination. Geologist Susie Beiersdorfer will moderate the meeting.

The situation in the Youngstown area has attracted extensive national and local media attention and with good reason. The December 31, 2011 earthquake shook Youngstown and was reportedly felt in several states and as far away as Ontario, Canada. The earthquake may have awakened many more citizens to the serious health and safety issues reported by those living near fracking and injection wells and reports of drinking water source contamination. Youngstown had no recorded earthquakes before the injection well drilling. There have been twelve earthquakes since drilling began. What the Youngstown area decides to do regarding a moratorium on injection wells or fracking has far reaching implications for the entire region and the nation.

Questions to be addressed at the town hall meeting include:

What is the scientific information linking the Youngstown earthquakes and the toxic brine injection well? What is the evidence showing that the Youngstown earthquake was man-made? Will there be more earthquakes?

How does lack of local control affect infrastructure, property values, and emergency safeguards?

To date, public meetings in Youngstown regarding natural gas drilling and fracking, wastewater injection wells and the earthquakes have generally not allowed the audience and concerned citizens to freely voice their health and safety concerns and engage in dialogue about their issues. This town hall is designed to let the people speak and get some answers to their questions.

Dec. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Jeffrey Dick, chairman of Youngstown State University's geology department, talks with Bloomberg's Mark Niquette about the possibility that hydraulic fracturing may be causing earthquakes around Youngstown, Ohio. Fracking is a process of blasting sand, water and chemicals into shale to extract natural gas. Earthquakes didn't happen around the city until D&L Energy Corp. began injecting wastewater from drilling into a 9,300-foot disposal well in December 2010. This afternoon organizers sketched a layout for the festival in Wick Park, with spaces laid out for the Green Mother’s tent, Kids’ activities tent, Nature Tent, Neighbors tent, Vendor tents, Alpacas area (still have that possibility of the baby alpaca!), Drop and Shop/ GreenTeam/Yo Litter tent, Youngstown Facebook Garage Sale tent, etc., etc. and buskers and entertainment and education and, and, whew…

And that doesn’t even count all the GREAT farmers, bakers, cooks, herbalists and canners and sale items and etc. etc. who will be over at the Farmer’s Market section of the Festival – remember, that’s where ALL THE FOOD will be!

"We’re starting to build our clinic! Randy, our carpenter extraordinaire, has once again volunteered his time and hard work. This time he is donating his talented hands to convert an old garage into a beautiful clinic space for our rescued cats. Naturally, the timing couldn’t be worse, we haven’t even begun to recover from the financial devastation left behind by Animal Charity and their big, bad and highly illegal raid of our shelter in September. We had been – for once – in reasonable shape prior to the raid and in a position to make this dreamed-of clinic a rocking reality.

"Then came the raid, like a tornado out of a clear blue sky. Stealing our cats, our records, and pretty much anything that wasn’t nailed down in one fell swoop. We tried very hard to take the high road here, which isn’t easy while listening to yourself being described as everything from a crazy cat hoarder who meant well but got overwhelmed to an actively evil human being who pocketed money meant for food and medicine while watching cats suffer and die. I’ve heard that I’m an incoherent drug addict, an escaped mental patient, a brooding sociopath, a woman on the edge… of what, God alone knows.

"Anyhoo, here we be. The carpenters are available for a few precious weeks between jobs and we have to build now, before they have to leave us to earn an actual living. And the fact that the raid left us financially devastated can’t be allowed to stop this from happening.
And this is where you, our friends and adopters and even those of you who aren’t cat nuts like the rest of us, can help us. We’re begging you to please help us. We’ve been able to scrounge enough 2 x 4′s to frame the room out. We received 2 small grants that paid for spray insulation on the ceiling and the walls. Randy and our wonderful landlord Gary have found enough pipe and parts to make the sinks a reality. But, even insulated, it is cold in there. And by summer, it will be hot in there.

"So here we are, once again begging you, our friends, for your help. We need to raise $6500.00 to finish this project and we have to do it while we still have carpenters here to finish it up. It’s happening, but we need your help!

"And we need YOUR help to do it right. Thanks to our local “humane society” the funds that we were going to use to build our clinic went instead towards keeping our shelter alive during the six weeks that we voluntarily closed to allow their investigation to proceed. Six weeks of paying rent and utilities for our building and retail vet care prices for the lucky cats in foster care who escaped the raid were enough to seriously deplete our finances. Add to that replacing the things that mysteriously vanished while the building was out of our hands and me having to pay a substantial legal bill with money that I wanted to donate to the shelter and you can understand why money is tight, tight, tight around here. So, you may ask, why start on the clinic project when finances are not exactly optimum? The answer is twofold. The first part is good news – our wonderful carpenter Randy had some time between jobs and offered to come up and do the building. The second part is even better news, we received a $1200.00 grant that was earmarked for our veterinary clinic. So, the timing stinks, but the time is now.

"If you’ve ever done a project like this, you know that even with volunteers doing the building materials add up to a lot more than $1200.00. The studs and insulation alone cost over $1500.00. Then there is drywall, wiring, windows, doors, primer, paint, counter-top and faucets. We have scavenged a lot of the materials we need, but we still have to purchase a lot of building materials. The most important – and expensive – part of this project is the climate control unit. The new clinic is very well insulated, but it did start life as a garage, hot in summer and cold in winter. We have been taking bids for furnaces, and the lowest bid so far comes to $5300.00. This clinic means a lot to The Cat Ladies Society. With it, we can continue with our primary mission of helping the cats and kittens that need us most, those who come through our doors battered and bruised and sometimes ill. This will insure adequate facilities for our vet tech, vet assistant and visiting veterinarian volunteers to isolate and properly care for cats who just need a little extra help before they are ready to become peoples’ beloved pets.

After attending the candlelight vigil for the departed and missing felines that were lovingly cared for at the Cat Ladies' Society we walked around the two floors and many rooms - never such a wrong and grievous thing to see as all those empty beds.

I was struck with how different that situation was handled compared to our gritty Valley here -- number 1 was that many of the kitties they took from the old guy's home had "upper respiratory" ailments which is the "kitty cold" !! AND there is no mention of having to put them down for their mere colds! in fact many of the cats would be up for adoption in a few days -- faster than all the time it took Charities to execute their despicable deed. Different area [income, class?] of the country, different attitude.

Pirko Sundial to be Unveiled at Youngstown State

The unveiling and dedication of the Richard Pirko memorial sundial will be Thursday August 26, at 1:30pm, outside the Ward-Beecher Planetarium, Youngstown University, Youngstown Ohio 44555 (weather permitting -- in case of bad weather we will hold it indoors in the Planetarium).

It should be a short ceremony. Tony Armeni (the sculptor) will be there. The Dean is invited, but his schedule is in flux, and may not be able to make it. The President and the Provost are also invited. Those saying a few words will include Victoria (Rick's wife), Angela Pupino, Pat Durrell and Warren Young at this point. Ron Cole (YSU media person) will be there, and with Warren's help will be writing up a press release for the event.

The man who made a film about Ed Abbey in the 1990's and was fortunate enough to meet and interview him several times in the early 1980's is constantly refreshing an awesome Facebook page as a way to keep his memory alive through images, video and words. The videos are inspiring... a bit amazing in how much they move even a casual viewer just stumbling into Abbey. There's one separate video and a few pages of videos that play right in situ.

sharing UPDATE from continuing workshops to establish the Art Belt of NE Ohio & NW PA:

To All Power of the Arts Participants and Friends,

As a reminder, our next work meeting is scheduled for Friday, April 9 at Bliss Hall at YSU from 5 PM - 7 PM. We are very excited to continue to move forward with the progress we've made thus far.

For those who were unable to make it to our last meeting and as a reminder to those that were, we broke into two work groups to raise some questions and have an open dialogue about public policy/public support and about advocacy/arts council. From these discussions nine topics/questions surfaced that we are now going to delve further into. Please see below for what each work group will be addressing:

Public Policy/Public Support (facilitated by Paul Hagman):
·         Is there anything "on the books" in Youngstown, Warren, Mahoning County and/or Trumbull County relating to public policy and/or public support for arts and culture?
·         Research selected cities that have been successful in securing public support for the arts.
·         Explore tax levy and other potential funding sources for public support.

Advocacy/Arts Council (facilitated by Bryan DePoy):
·         Research what previous groups that have tried to set up arts councils in the Mahoning Valley have done, and understand their lessons learned.
·         Why an arts council? - Define, explore, and prioritize: What are the needs of artists? What are the needs of arts and cultural organizations? What are the needs of the community at large? Where are the gaps between what is needed and what is currently available?
·         What might an advocacy group that promotes alliances look like?
·         Develop "one-stop-shopping" website.
·         Inventory assets of artists and organizations and make that available to share.

Ad hoc Committee of the Lead Team (facilitated by Janus Small prior to next meeting):
·         Develop mission, vision, and guiding principles for the Power of the Arts initiative - Progress to date will be reported at the April 9th meeting.

Annual York Rite Chili Cook-off Monday at the Youngstown Masonic Temple on Wick Ave., downtown Youngstown. The all-you-can-eat event cost a mere $6.

Some of the chili chefs - 3 of the 7 vats of the different varieties have already been gobbled up by hungry chili-heads. The room full of good food and camaraderie was packed, and appeared to be the best turn-out in a long time.

Chill In The Temple: a man went to the Dean of the Education Department at Youngstown State University for assistance; he was already having a bad day having had an altercation at the bus depot, and was homeless and wanted help. The newspaper claimed he was trespassing but this would not be possible as the University is a public institution. The Dean of Education could provide no help.

Other idea:
Start with a hugely expanded version of Karen Fry's TAA simple paper monthly newsletter. Of course I am personally prejudiced in that I get all my art schedule hints from it -- where to show what when (I can't keep up with all the hanging opportunities in this Valley) - and what's/who's who in the art community - but that aside - I know she doesn't even use water-proof ink, & I believe she assembles them all herself, so imagine what difference a little more manpower/funding would make?

Although I wonder if the artists of the Valley do not read newsletters? And there is a fee ($7 ) to have it mailed. It'd be nice to be able to leave free copies around like some ... mini - ? Voice or something. It's online (free)#, also, but I like to circle things, & refer to old issues since there's often too much stuff to do in 1 month. # Correction: http://www.artgally.com/taa/ doesn't seem to be up-to-date

I think almost a *census* of the culture of the area should be taken - gather a sheet of info from *every soul that has even the least interest* in culture in the Valley. I think that we *don't know* exactly who "we" & "us" are! This would take some time: Re: above, below... sort of a circle we have, haven't we (sadly). And maybe people need to feel they've either been counted, or that they count. Then again attempting a herding of the "artist" part of the community is of course, like herding cats... And the third overheard complaint (out of order) "Who listens? Who's in charge?" Who is going to do the Big Listening? I believe the *community* has to hitch up its trousers and *decide* that it *has* an identity and that it is going to listen *to itself*.

One needs to know what people desire! List as many checkboxes as one can come up with - we need help putting all our wants into words, getting from vague "I want to make a living" & "arts add value to life" to concrete ("I want to have 6 people visit my studio/gallery every day") - have to tally them all up... Need to gather all the data in one place.

And then maybe drawing from that gathering of data, assemble a directory of ... ? culture persons? I was just viewing http://www.lvartscouncil.org/directory/index.cfm and it gets *very* complicated very quickly ... Although these people pay annual $32 fee for it. Not sure if that cost would go over too well here.

I guess my personal thought keeps coming back to the newsletter because I wish I had a dollar for everytime I've heard a local artist say, "I didn't know about this or that". Even I would like to see a once a month Art Walk like some other cities have, and even a few times a year An Open Studios tour/thing. It'd probably have to alternate between Trumbull & Mahoning since hard to cover both areas in 1 visit - for either a Walk or Studios Tour.

Having the monthly ArtWalk would (well, hopefully) give the Valley some kinda stamp of Art Value Authenticity in the broader world... maybe.

That is the second thing I would like that dollar for: everytime someone has said, "Why don't we have art aficionados/writers/buyers from all around, even NYC, acknowledging/promoting how great our art/ art community is here?"

It should include as many persons and entities who are interested in the arts & cultural scene in the Mahoning Valley as possible. (There are so many tools available to every user that it can be whatever the user wants - from sharing new artwork, posting events on bulletin board, or reading artists' blogs to maintaining a personal portfolio, networking, or chatting. Although if it becomes a One-Stop Place for art community it may become unwieldy -- just another bulletin board with streams of posts to wade through. Susie B has been looking for a long time for the most palatable way to circulate the monthly schedule of all the cultural events - nothing seems easiest... everything has its pitfalls. Text, pages, links, clicking, scrolling, - no wonder I cotton to the paper TAA newsletter - what a relief!

Tropical storm Rick forms off Mexico Pacific coast

MEXICO CITY, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Rick formed off Mexico's Pacific coast on Thursday and could become a hurricane within the next day, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Rick was located 345 miles (555 km) south-southeast of the resort city of Acapulco with maximum sustained winds near 50 mph (85 kph).

"Continued strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours," the Miami-based hurricane center said.

AFP - Hurricane Rick weakened further early Monday and was downgraded to a Category 3 storm as it moved up Mexico's Pacific coast, US forecasters said.

"Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 125 miles (205 kilometers) per hour with higher gusts," the National Hurricane Center said in an new advisory.

"Rick is a Category Three hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale," the center added.

At 0900 GMT Monday, Rick was around 380 miles (615 kilometers) south southwest of the resort town of Cabo San Lucas as it headed northwest at 10 miles (17 kilometers) per hour, parallel to Mexico's southern coast, the NHC said.

The US forecasters warned about "potentially dangerous surf conditions" caused by large ocean swells.

"Interests in western mainland Mexico should monitor the progress of this hurricane," the Miami-based center said.

Rick is on track to turn northward on Tuesday and is expected to gradually weaken over the next 24 to 48 hours, the NHC said.

But the center warned that even despite the weakening, "Rick is still expected to be a dangerous hurricane as it approaches the southern Baja Peninsula."

Asteroid's approximate apparent visual magnitude by following definition:

the error could exceed 1 magnitude. No values are output for phase angles
greater than 120 degrees, since the extrapolation error could be large and

delta deldot =
Range ("delta") and range-rate ("delta-dot") of target center with respect
to the observer at the instant light seen by the observer at print-time would
have left the target center (print-time minus down-leg light-time); the
distance traveled by a light ray emanating from the center of the target and
recorded by the observer at print-time. "deldot" is a projection of the
velocity vector along this ray, the light-time-corrected line-of-sight from the
coordinate center, and indicates relative motion. A positive "deldot" means the
target center is moving away from the observer (coordinate center). A negative
"deldot" means the target center is moving toward the observer.
Units: AU and KM/S

S-O-T /r =
Sun-Observer-Target angle; target's apparent solar elongation seen from
observer location at print-time. If negative, the target center is behind
the Sun. Angular units: DEGREES.

The '/r' column is a Sun-relative code, output for observing sites
with defined rotation models only.

/T indicates target trails Sun (evening sky)
/L indicates target leads Sun (morning sky)

NOTE: The S-O-T solar elongation angle is the total separation in any
direction. It does not indicate the angle of Sun leading or trailing.

S-T-O =
Sun-Target-Observer (~ PHASE ANGLE) angle: the vertex angle at target center
formed by a vector to the apparent center of the Sun and a vector intersecting
the observer at print-time. This measurable angle is within 20 arcseconds
(0.006 deg) of the reduced PHASE ANGLE at observer's location at print time.
The difference is due to down-leg stellar aberration affecting measured target
position but not apparent solar illumination direction. When computing phase,
Horizons uses the true phase angle, not S-T-O, but the resulting difference
in illuminated fraction is less than 0.001%.

Trying to identify this, walked back from the haywagon to pick it up in the field while they were repairing the twine-knotter on the baler. There had been turkey vultures swooping low all day, probably scouting for baling-related carnage, & I'd picked up turkey feathers on other walks in the woods but hawks fly over,too, so maybe red-tail?

What work: rolling forward though ground hay dust, crushed Queen-Ann's lace oil full of bitter horse-promises, swallows darting and daring, hot sun, heartbeat. Through diesel fume, engine chug, baler clank, and the afternoon.

It's so simple it's hard! Some thoughts from 2 books on why it's good to be working to live and living to work:

1. Anonyminity -- one's work must be known by a higher authority.
-- otherwise a worker sees themselves as invisible, generic or anonymous

2. Irrelevance -- person must see that their job matters to someone, anyone.
-- must see connection between their work & satisfaction of some person(s)

3. Immeasurement -- need tangible means of accessing success or failure.
-- need to gauge their progress & level of contributions for themselves
-- need to see their own success or level of success by themselves.
-- cannot depend on the whims or opinions of another, even benevolent, person.
-- must know #1, Who their work helps, and #2, How their work helps them.
Big artists and performers can lead erratic, unhappy, unsatisfied lives because of
subtle fear of irrelevance.

Steel Flight

Flight of Steel. Drawing on our interest in astronomy, the fate of the Valley's steel industry, rides in a friend's plane over the beautiful Trumbull county landscapes, and Leonardo's interest in flight, flying machines, and his theories on astronomy and visual effects, I have painted a scene of a Bessemer converter (steel processor) "burning out" on the darker left-hand side, with the sparks flying up and mingling with the stars in the sky. On the lighter (landscape) side I have painted my friend's plane and some of the views from the air, including the coke plant in Warren, OH. I overlaid quotes of Leonardo's observations on astronomy on the star field, and on those aerial perspective on the landscapes viewed from the plane. The plane emerges from the dark clouds of industry to a possible brighter day.

Listening to the computerized weather voice for part of an hour, coffee-trucks: truck-coffees. Fluff of a dead skunk across from the Catholic church on the hill, parishioner steps into the road for the Good Friday service and steps back out of the way of the incoming car, (squeal of the stove door heralds warmth of wood, the firery furnace), writer strings together spring, resurrection and vampires' undead-ness, and 2 shows deal with techincal descriptions of death by crucifixtion -- what's the fixation? I like my hotsauce closet very much flaming endorphines of the state, on the sidewalk in the rain a wide wide Bandaid wet but never wide enough to cover all the valleys and wooded hills, with snow, ice and discovery.

Blue ribbony day-o-way was yesterday for up the storm windows on the storm doors of the storm home we did put (for the first time in 2 years!). It was only beacause we were in need of screenage and thus kilt two birds with one cat... Little Miss Kitty (a.k.a. Frances Jr. Laptop) is not allowed to climb anything including stairs for 2 weeks so we blocked the stairs and put up the 2 storm door glasses.

Wind blowing, boiled water on woodstove, listened to Prairie Home Companion 2 times, cat at the window, let cat in, work more on webpages, cat sleeping in front of fire, fed fire all day

raining and storming llllllllllllll.............llllllllll high wind gusts ripping the limbs off trees, sadly. A baby coon cute as a brown-eyed button scramples tippy-toed over the porch stairs while its slack-limbed owner holds its leash. A large dog watches with great interest. On the return trip a rabbit glows red-eyed at the edge of the road with a mouthful of lawn still hours before dawn.

blue-eyed beauties

Our sweet blue-eyed grass from the backyard lawn now reverted to meadow, they are positively explosive this year, I never saw such tall, thick and heavy clumps, whata lotta precious fiery blue jewels they are, blue-eyed beauties springing all about the yard singing about rain and sunshine and heat. Cardinal sits quietly on the oak branch overhead watching.
One can pick them out from all the other non-blooming (don't want to say dull!...) clumps of grasses because the grass leaves are like little thin tiny iris leaves for they are in the iris family. They are not grasses of course but instead related to the Irises."

Eagle's Nest flying over the land

One of the coolest and most exciting projects I ever participated in was helping to build this trail shelter (Eagle's Nest Shelter, on the Blue Mountain straddling Berks and Schyulkill counties, Pennsylvania.) In this photo (see credits below) I've circled the house we were living in at the time in Bernville. The National Guard based at Fort Indiantown Gap, used this task for practice, using their skycrane to ever-so-gently whisk our precious Swedish-styled scribed construction up to the top of the mountain in the blink of an eye. The Blue Mountain Eagle Climbing Club (based in Reading) led by David Crosby constructed it at Rentschler's Arboretum in Bernville. Cindy Ross and her husband Todd Glatfelter showed us the scribing method, a secure method of sculpting out the logs to hug each other.

April 7The university of Wisconsin Milwaukee is full of happy energized students. At least 3 times a student was engaged in energetic conversation with an older professor srtopped along the sidewalks -- this on the sunny day.
